Sometimes Bitcoin Skeptic Edward Snowden Says Bitcoin Stronger After China Ban

Whistleblower Edward Snowden hasn’t always been a proponent of Bitcoin but likes what he sees right now.

Via Twitter, Edward Snowden said that China’s ban of Bitcoin didn’t hurt the world’s first cryptocurrency. “It’s up ~10x since, despite a coordinated global campaign by governments to undermine public understanding of—and support for—cryptocurrency,” Snowden said referring to the 2017 ban China imposed.

  • Famously, Snowden used Bitcoin to buy the servers used in NSA leak that led to him fleeing to Russia.
  • Snowden hasn’t always had the most positive outlook on Bitcoin. Earlier this year he said Bitcoin has a privacy problem.
  • Also, Snowden thought Bitcoin wouldn’t last but was bullish on crypto in general: “One day capital-B Bitcoin will be gone, but as long as there are people out there who want to be able to move money without banks, cryptocurrencies are likely to be valued.”
  • Previously, Snowden came out in support of privacy coin Zcash. “Zcash for me is the most interesting right now, because the privacy properties of it are truly unique…,” he said.
  • Although Snowden is bullish on crypto, he is not quite bullish on the public blockchain. “That is simply incompatible with having an enduring mechanism for trade, because you cannot have a lifelong history of everyone’s purchases.”
