What Is NBA Top Shot?

Launched in October 2020, NBA Top Shot has taken the collectible and crypto world by storm and found a way to marry the two. Top Shot is built on Flow and powered by Dapper Labs. They created an exciting way for their collectors to chase periodic pack drops and compete in challenges throughout the NBA season.

Each pack drop price varies in price, “Commons” being the lowest priced. They are usually $9 a pack for 3 Common moments but can be much more expensive for Legendary packs. Within each pack it will contain different randomized serial moments. Each moment can vary depending on the pack drop type (below we break that down more).

When the pack drop is announced, 1 hour before drop there is a queue open for all eligible collectors to join. Once in the queue, you are in a virtual line to be randomly placed in the drop line. This can be unclear, but all collectors are then placed in their randomized place once the queue is closed. Your purchase is done based on what spot you are assigned. This random process is to keep it fair for all collectors and to combat the dreaded bots.

Collectors are always chasing that “Rare” player and or moment for each drop. The community has also deemed lower minted serial numbers and jersey numbers are to be the most valuable and sought after for each moment.

@TopShot_Updates on Twitter is a great follow to make sure you never miss any drops or TS news.

However, when waiting on new moments you can hit the Marketplace to buy, sell, and trade your favorite moments. Players moments move similar to a crypto coin, especially during the season. The better the player is performing or if he has an outstanding game, that will dramatically change the value of his moments.

In the middle of their 3rd Series this NBA season their next drop will be on 12/7. Follow the tweet below to read the details for the upcoming release.

What Are Moments?

You can think of NBA Top Shot moments the same way you think of collectible trading cards. They are now digitalized into an NFT highlight of that particular play. Collectible trading cards had a surge in interest in the past two years, and NBA Top Shot was able to use that momentum.

That momentum continued for Top Shot and in February of this year they had their highest sale to date- a whooping $208,000. The sale was for a Legendary Cosmic: LeBron James Dunk 29/49 with Badges TS Debut and Championship Year, below we will break that down to understand Top Shot a bit further.

  • Legendary – Tier Status
    • There are 3 total tiers: Common (1000+ moments), Rare (50-999 Moments), and Legendary (25-99). They have also added a Fandom tier this summer.
    • Legendary is the rarest tiered set as each moment has a max supply of only 99
  • Cosmic – Set Name
    • Each Moment is assigned a Set Name. Most common being the Base Set of each Series.
    • Set name rarity is based off tier status, Legendary being the rarest.
  • Dunk – Play Type
    • A play type categorizes each Moment.
    • Other play type examples include 3 pointer, assist, block, and more.
  • Top Shot Debut & Championship Year – Badge(s)
    • Top Shot Debut means just as you’d expect, this moment is their fist moment on TS. It is often used different sets, even though it is the same moment. Different sets attach different rarity and utility. TS Debuts are highly sought after, as they are looked as their “rookie moments/first” to collectors.
    • Championship Year means they won they NBA Championship during that particular season/TS series.
    • There are 4 other badges that can be added to moments: Rookie Mint, Rookie Year, Rookie Premier, and Challenge Reward (awarded when challenges are complete- we’ll talk more about this later)

Each moment you own contributes to a Collector Score, the rarer or older the moments the more points it adds to your collector score. Once in your account you can click on your Collector Score and it will breakdown how points are obtained and how much each moment is worth. For example, collecting all the moments from your favorite team comes with a collector score bonus- to help boost your score!

Collector Scores are used for pack drop access, certain drop ques hold a minimum score to enter.  This is to reward the “whale” collectors in the space and be sure their rewarded for their contributions.

How To Buy Moments/Packs?

The process to purchase on TS is one of the more user friendly experiences when it comes to buying NFTs. At times, it can be quite the process to get set up properly to buy NFTs and then even more of a process to perform the purchase. Luckily that is not the case for TS as they as a user friendly experience.

You’ll need to create a TS account via their website to start. You’ll click the “get in” button in the top right hand corner. There it will take you to create a Dapper Labs account, you can easily use your Google account if you’d like. Flow powers dapper and the account is required to purchase any moments or packs on the site.

Once you’ve successfully created an account, you simply fund your Dapper account balance. You can fund the account with any major credit card, FLOW Wallet, or they even accept some popular cryptocurrencies as payment through Coinbase.

Now that you have some funds loaded, you can hit the marketplace to buy any moment available for sale or start with their Starter Pack for new collectors.

If pack drops have been a miss for you or you cant seem to be around when they drop, TS has you covered. They have another fun creative way to obtain moments through their challenges.

They will have Challenges and Showcase Challenges. They are the best way to earn moments and rewards for your collector score. Complete them by collecting the specified moments in the designated time period.

Showcase Flash Challenges have been particularly fun this year, as they are using real time stats to complete them. They will announce the Flash Challenge before the games start and what the requirements are. Sometimes its most points or rebounds for the day, but each challenge will vary. They can get creative at times too, check out the one below…

Once the games finish the moments are announced that are needed for the challenge. You can then start collecting to win an announced price and build your collector score. After the time period is up, every collector that completed the challenge is airdropped their reward. Depending on the challenge is can be a particular moment or an unopened pack.

What Is Next?

As you are on the site, you may notice that they are still in Beta. Which at times is hard to believe because of how popular and successful NBA Top Shot is. Being in Beta they do have some disruptions to the marketplace and during drops, as you’d expect. Collectors are looking forward to being out of Beta and seeing less bugs as they work through them in their infant stages of the site.

This summer, Top Shot also added two new features, WNBA moments and Fandom Moments. You obtained the first Fandom moments by attending Summer League in Las Vegas. Only those who attended the Summer League games were able to purchase these moments. The best part, these moments were from a game you watched that day! You owned a moment you saw in person and bought at the arena. Talk about major utility and owning something that has special meaning to you.

This seems to be the next step for Top Shot- bringing Top Shot to each game and allowing those in attendance to own a piece of that particular game.

Lastly, some exciting news for the TS family- Kevin Durant has joined Top Shot and has made his first purchases. You have to love the transparency of crypto and the digging of fellow collectors. Trevor noted below his curiosity to the sale and reached out to Durant, who quickly responded with confirmation of the sale(s).

Shortly after this, Top Shot confirmed with a “GM” post of their own to KD.
