After a surge of interest in the metaverse drove play-to-earn games like Axie Infinity to extraordinary heights, Facebook seemed to have topped off the metaverse trend with the rebranding of its company to Meta. Today, the social media giant’s metaverse is officially launching in the US and Canada.

Facebook Metaverse Announcement
Today, Facebook announced that it would be launching Horizon Worlds, its virtual reality world of online avatars, to anyone in the US and Canada ages 18 and older.
In October of 2020, Horizon Worlds opened a beta test run for select Oculus VR headset users who had to have invites in order to join the virtual world. The latest announcement, however, is ending those invitations and opening up the Horizon Worlds beta to everyone.
Alongside the new world, Facebook is also debuting Arena Clash, a team-based 3v3 laser tag game inside Horizon Worlds. The game can be used for creators to understand new mechanics and provide templates for creators to use when building their own games. Creators can modify working scripts to create their own community games.
Here are some of the favorites on Horizon Worlds built by the community already:
- Pixel Plummet: Explore this retro, arcade-style multiplayer platform battle royale with a vapor wave theme. Just make sure you don’t fall! (Creators: Matthias and collaborators SKitter_, OcuLos410, Laex05 and Traveseo)
- Wand & Broom: Fly high above Townscity on your magic broom with your trusty wand at your side, or just explore the city and hang out with friends. (Creators: TheJohnMclay and collaborators rcdegs, Elastic_Plastic, JHeff.CS, Chrish_Topher_066, Solaris30 and burnbuns)
- Mark’s Riverboat: Grab your friends and enjoy a relaxing ride on the river aboard a triple decker riverboat. (Creators: tMARKbirman and 5andw1ch)
Other Major Corporations Building Metaverses
Facebook isn’t the only corporate giant entering the metaverse.
Major athletic retailer Adidas announced recently that it would also be jumping into the metaverse in a partnership with The Sandbox.
Logically, Adidas’ major competitor Nike also revealed that the company filed for multiple metaverse-related trademarks. I’m already imagining how many virtual Air Force Ones I’m going to be seeing in the metaverse.
Even governments want a piece of the action too. The country of Barbados surprised many people after confirming that it will be building its very own embassy within the Decentraland metaverse.

What does this all mean for the metaverse? I think that as we’ve seen so many different entities hop into the metaverse scene, we can reasonably assume that no one single metaverse will win out amongst the others. We’ll likely have contributions to the metaverse from all across the world from different companies and governments in order to create a global, virtual layer to our physical reality that we are all currently limited to.
It won’t happen overnight, but the fierce competition we’re seeing from major players across different industries is telling of what’s to come for the metaverse.
