According to an announcement from Chris Lund, head of community and partnerships for Portals, a metaverse play on Solana, Binance US and FTX will have dedicated metaverse offices in Portals Downtown. The space will be focusing on “delivering the latest news, charts, and events virtually.”

Portals describes itself as “Animal Crossing meets Sim City meets Sandbox and Decentraland.” It is an early favorite to gain traction on Solana, as the current projects with the most “meta-traction” are Ethereum based, such as the aforementioned Decentraland and Sandbox, plus of course, Gala Games.

Portals operates differently than the above protocols. Rather than plots of land, Portals uses an NFT collection of “5000 access key cards” that allow owners to own a space in the Portals virtual world. Notably, Portals also features fully integrated audio and video chat functionality. As of December, the floor price for the access keys were ~11 SOL, so it is still early for the project.

Speaking on the announcement, Binance said the office will be “a gathering place for exchange users.” The spokesperson went on to say that this community-focused space is a forward-looking way to engage said users. More or less, it could be seen as the metaverse version of Telegram.

In the sense that, Telegram allowed for more engagement between users and protocols, and this “office” could be conceptualized as the next extension of that. Of course, Binance and FTX are just two of many protocols utilizing Portals. Raydium, Magic Eden, Audius, Bonfida are a few of the other big players building there.

From the looks of it, these spaces are clearly much more dynamic than websites, and as noted with Telegram, these companies and entities building there are basically building what you could call “websites 2.0.” If they can somehow bring the community “chat” together like with Telegram, the possibilities are endless.

It also presents an entirely new marketing strategy for these companies, allowing for a much more dynamic ability to connect to users. If you think this is a fad, think again. Samsung recently launched their space on Decentraland. These corporations making a foray in the metaverse are no doubt implicitly on-boarding crypto and Web3.

Portals taking off would be ideal for Solana, as solidifying a major metaverse play would make them a definite mainstay and essentially a permanent competitor to Ethereum. The first NFT released by Portals to commemorate the project just sold for 525 SOL, so clearly, there is wide interest in the project. Portals is certainly one to keep an eye on.

The metaverse is here to stay, and it is very heartening to know that Major companies are building on Ethereum and Solana rather than Meta.
