The Otherside Drop: I Did Something I Wasn’t Supposed To Do…

The Otherside was the talk of the NFT and crypto Universe last weekend. Its mint was one for the history books and today I let you see it from my point of view.

What is the Otherside?

Well, we still don’t technically really know. What we do know, is that this is BAYC Metaverse play and they had 100K/200K available for sale this weekend to those lucky enough who KYC’d their wallets.

Even with the mystery and unknown of the Otherside, that didn’t matter much before the drop or after. With the rich short story BAYC/Yuga Labs has, everyone was waiting for their chance at Otherside land. NFT projects were victims of sales for liquidity, while $APE was enjoying an inverse effect, due to Otherside land price being pegged at 305 $APE. $APE ran as high as $25, before minting.

We all knew the Otherside event would be a wild mint, but I don’t think anyone expected a steady 2ETH gas mint price for 55,000 deeds. Yuga Labs even took, what they thought was proper precaution, but the gas wars ensued. Not for 20 minutes, but for hours. It is a interesting spot to be in, when 5000 GWEI is considered a deal! Even so, they still minted and sold out, before hitting their planned 2nd wave of minting.

My Trip To The Otherside…

I first want to start this off by saying, NEVER DO THIS. This is a very odd situation, where sometimes you have to go with your gut instinct and take a calculated risk. Again, I repeat, I would never recommend doing this.

That is the exact reason I am choosing to write about this situation, we always hear of the tragic stories of NFT/crypto losses due to bad judgment. This is the complete opposite, with a fantastic ending and friendship made. That being said, here is my personal account of the Otherside drop.

I remember in March when Yuga Labs announced their initial KYC sign up. When I read the tweet at my desk, I thought it was for BAYC/MAYC owners exclusively. After reading through the comments section on their post, it seemed not many Apes were happy about it either and weren’t going to sign up.

Following a few minutes of scrolling, I didn’t follow BAYC recommendation within their cryptic “probably going to want to be a part of this” comment. Fast forward to 4/25, when Yuga Labs broke the internet, by stating all those who KYC’d their wallet are now whitelisted for the much anticipated Otherside land mint. The emotions of the news for NFT collectors ranged quite widely. Some were ecstatic they took the chance and signed up for KYC, others, were devastated they didnt listen to the recommendation. I fell under the “devastated” category. I read the tweet, and the comments — still didn’t sign up.

Shortly after I realized I struck out, due to a lapse of judegment. I found myself on Twitter and saw the above tweet from @Crypt0Will10. He mentioned he wasn’t sure if he’d have enough liquid for the mint and was asking someone else if they wanted to perhaps work something out. I then replied with a wave and mailbox emoji and sent him a private DM. To my surprise, he messaged back and was open to discussing if we could find a fair way. As stated above, this is an easy way to get yourself in a horrible situation- typically. It is never a best practice to reach out in this manner, but for whatever reason, I had a great feeling about it.

After connecting briefly on Twitter, we both agreed to connect via Discord. Over the next week and hours of great conversation, I felt even better about the idea of this. After the details of the mint were announced by Yuga Labs, we developed a plan and got prepared for the much-anticipated mint day. One of those plans was Crypt0Will explaining the importance of even extra ETH incase of a potential gas war, even though Yuga Labs said they had it handled…we know how that went (update: all failed ETH transactions have been sent back to the appropriate wallets).

Mint day came and we were ready to rock and roll! We waited and waited for gas to ease up, but never did. We then made appropriate adjustments and made sure we didn’t miss our chance to secure our mint and our Otherside land. As 55,000 others did, we were at the mercy of the ETH network and its miners. We eventually were able to successfully mint and secured our land in the Otherside, the deed was done, pun intended.

It was a great experience for a multitude of reasons, but I believe the biggest for me was how it all came together and executed. A simple wave on Twitter to a Doodles PFP and one week later we are in the thick of it with everyone else trying to secure our Otherside land, that we didn’t know anything about.

I want to thank Crypt0Will publicly and although I never recommend doing this, maybe this will show you there are still great honest people out there and Crypt0Will is one. Please go give him a follow on Twitter here, as he is a great mind and follow in the NFT space.

Did you mint or buy any Otherside land, comment below and let us know!
