‘Algoracle’ Fills Much Needed Gap in Algorand DeFi

Algoracle will be the first oracle to ship on Algorand.

The Importance of Oracles

Oracles are a vital element of DeFi. The most popular oracle is Chainlink, which has the meme-reputation of partnering with absolutely every project. This is because oracles are necessary for DeFi to function. In short, oracles are needed to bring off-chain data on-chain. APIs can be used to source data off-chain, but this is not enough.

Decentralized oracles increase the reliability of the information provided to smart contracts. As Ethereum.org puts it: Oracles are “sort of like a public commons, but for decentralized data.” Data can be hacked and manipulated, thus rigging the data of a smart contract. Decentralized Oracles mitigate this by sourcing and querying multiple data sources and distributing trust between participants. In a way, DeFi rely on oracles to provide absolute “truth” in data sourced from the real world.

Blockchains cannot connect to real-world data and events on their own

Algorand’s DeFi has burst on the scene in 2022, with multiple major projects going live on mainnet. Among the leaders are Algofi, Tinyman, and Pact. Hitherto, Algorand has not had a functioning oracle, and luckily, Algoracle will fill that void. Rather than trying to onboard Chainlink, which controls over 65% of all DeFi, Algorand has opted to incentivize developers to build one native.

Algorand’s Custom, Native Solution

As reported in NewsBTC, Algoracle is being built natively and is able to leverage Algorand’s unique design primitives. This makes complete decentralization possible without the limitations of a traditional oracle. Algoracle will provide “newer and more complex dApps with a native Verifiable Random Function (VRF) mechanism. This improves the oracle’s performance, efficiency, scalability, and uptime.”

The protocol allows for more complex interactions between smart contracts and off-chain data, which opens up the possibility of new use cases, including the ability for smart contracts to send data off-chain. “In that way, a user could receive notifications from their NFT marketplace, receive or send data on a decentralized exchange (DEX), and more.”

Partnerships with Prismatic, Glitter Finance

Algoracle has made numerous partnerships in the ecosystem, highlighting just how critical it is for any blockchain ecosystem to have a decentralized oracle securing smart contracts and the real-world data needed to execute them. Two of the major partnerships include Glitter Finance, a bridge connecting Algorand, Solana, and Polygon. The second is with Prismatic, a highly anticipated DAO/treasury management protocol coming to Algorand.

Speaking on the partnership, Kyle Wang, founding partner of Valhalla Capital, said: “This collaboration is a powerful step forward for Algorand DeFi”, citing Prismatics DAO tooling and Algoracle’s trusted data feeds as essential services that will “pave the way for the following generations of DApps on Algorand to flourish.”

Algoracle also received the first “Oracle Supagrant” by the Algorand Foundation and won the Algorand Encode Hackathon in 2021. They are live on Algorand’s Testnet, where you can test feeds, request feeds, or provide feeds. It will be a major step for Algorand when they launch on mainnet.

Data is to the blockchain sector what oil is to the industrial sector. Without it, smart contracts cannot exist in such a way that gives them the “teeth” needed for contractual obligations. This is why Chainlink is a blue-chip and known for its critical use case.
