Following up on their successful Times Square neon green ad last week, Algorand blacked out the iconic NYC tourist attraction. The dark theme was in honor of Earth Day, a yearly environmental awareness day.

- “Today, we unplug, celebrate the Earthand take a moment to reflect on where we are going. Tomorrow, we continue to work together to build a greener future using modern, energy-efficient technology,” Algorand said via Twitter.
- The ad is bringing awareness not only to Algorand but to crypto’s energy-efficient elements. The bad press that Bitcoin and Ethereum’s energy consumption receives has given normies the impression that all crypto is environmentally unfriendly.
- In a deft move — contrasting the Bitcoin uses as much energy as [insert country here], Algorand pointed out on Twitter that, “Darkening @TimesSquareNYC, which is progressive in energy use, for 1 hour is roughly equivalent to the energy required to complete 350MILLION transactions on Algorand vs 6 transactions on 1st gen blockchain,”
- Algorand prides itself on being an energy-efficient and scalable alternative to Ethereum. Recently, ALGO’s founder Silvio Micali discussed how his state proof-based chain plans on increasing its speed.
- ALGO is down 5% in the last 24 hours, and trading in the $0.71 cent range as of press time. Though, it’s drop is line with the rest of crypto. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum are down 6 percent in the last 24 hours.
- Recently appointed CEO Staci Warden, and Head of Marketing Keli Callaghan, were in attendance.
It is beyond our wildest dreams to turn off the lights in Times Square. Thats why Algorand provides such an invaluable service to the world. Blockchains are the future. But a green blockchain is a BETTER future. And that makes all the difference in the world. pic.twitter.com/ebpMiHRlDA
