Ethereum Shadow Fork Is Live — Here Are The Details

As we move closer to June 2022, we expected Ethereum to come out with some news regarding their merge — where the network moves from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake. Here are the latest details on their shadow fork that went live today.

Ethereum’s Shadow Fork Is Live

Today, Ethereum’s first mainnet shadow fork went live, which is a big deal for developers trying to transition the Ethereum network from PoW to PoS. An Ethereum Foundation developer, Parithosh Jayanthi, described the shadow fork as a way to “stress test” developers’ assumptions. Check out this thread below:

The shadow fork will essentially allow the main Ethereum network to share some data with the fork, so thus some transactions could appear on both chains. According to a block explorer page shared by developer Marius Van Der Wijden, the shadow fork has already processed over 1.5 million transactions with an average block time under 15 seconds.

Ethereum Developers Are Confident In The ‘Merge’

Van Der Wijden is the Ethereum developer that came up with the idea of the shadow fork, and he believes that testing the move from PoW to PoS is in itself a historical event. The foundation has been moving towards this moment for a while now, and the shadow fork being a success so far may mean that the ‘merge’ really is in its final stages of testing.

Previously, the foundation has tested shadow forks of the Görli testnet, but this is the first time the mainnet has been involved. In mid-march of this year, the Kiln testnet merge was another key milestone reached by the foundation, which allowed for a PoW execution layer to merge with a PoS Beacon Chain.

According to Ethereum developer Jayanthi, the Kiln merge testnet was created  “to allow the community to practice running their nodes, deploying contracts, testing infrastructure, etc.”, and the shadow fork goes a step further to provide a “stress test” to the network.

The continued progress makes it seem plausible that the Ethereum Foundation will be able to successfully move the network from PoW to Pos, but only time will tell if they have to push back the merge from June 2022.
