Apparently, the news is real this time. Looks like we are finally getting that Walmart metaverse we’ve been asking for — who needs a physically-backed Bitcoin ETF when you could just buy a loofah virutally?

According to a report, Walmart indeed is preparing to enter the space. CNBC uncovered several trademark applications including one for online retail with virtual merchandise and a downloadable portfolio for managing crypto portfolios.

• The trademark filings aren’t the first instance of Walmart dipping its toes into the cryptosphere. Walmart posted about hiring a crypto lead back in August of 2021.
• It’s unclear from the trademarks what Walmart’s plan is exactly. But I wouldn’t bet on Litecoin being a part of it. Back in October, many reputable news outlets were duped into thinking Walmart chose Litecoin for crypto transactions.
• Walmart has been in the news recently over supposed metaverse flirtations. A video made the rounds last week showing what the “Walmart metaverse” experience might look like. Turns out, it’s a four year old video.
• According to The Verge: “A quick Google reveals that the clip was made for Walmart by a digital agency in 2017 to “impress influencers at SXSW” (an example of an obscure capitalist ritual known as a “brand activation”).”
• Similarly, Nike’s foray into the metaverse was revealed through trademark filings back in October.
