Legendary Comedy Central cartoon South Park is back for its 25th season. In their season premiere, they decided to do what they do best and go after some folks. Their targets this time: Matt Damon and Bitcoin. Though, mostly Matt Damon.
The long-running series’ defacto villain Cartman does as he’s won’t to do and tries to get his fellow students of South Park Elementary embroiled in something they ought not to get themselves into. To help his cause he references the infamous Matt Damon commercial. “What does Matt Damon say in that Bitcoin commercial?”
One of his fellow students responds “My dad said he listened to Matt Damon and lost all his money…” to which Cartman responds “Yes, everyone did! But they were brave in doing so!”
What Cartman should have said is, “Those are unrealized losses. Your dad didn’t lose anything unless he sold.”
This isn’t South Park’s first brush with crypto. Back in December, South Park took a shot — fairly — at the NFT Industrial Complex.
South Park And Matt Damon
In the original ad directed by David Fincher, Matt Damon says a bunch of epic sounding — and empty words — set against a historical backdrop that ends with him staring out into space. It’s like the prestige TV version of a Dogecoin meme. Except the Dogecoin meme is better because it features Shiba Inu’s going to the moon.
The Crypto.com ad has been long the subject of ridicule. Though, Crypto.com appears to be the one’s laughing — definitely not Matt Damon, at least. The ad has almost 16,000,000 views on YouTube. Hella name recognition.
Famously, this isn’t Matt Damon’s first time getting roasted by South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. In their feature film, Team America, Matt Damon is heavily featured, despite the fact that all his neurons can muster dialogue-wise is, “I’m Matt Damon.”
