Non-sentient Apes Sign With Universal Music Group

Universal Music Group (UMG) announced earlier today that 10:22pm (a label under the UMG umbrella) signed four Bored Apes from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) to a record deal. The three purebred and one mutant ape will be known henceforth as Kingship.

It’s been a wild ride so far this year for BAYC. 10,000 of the apes were first minted back in April. Since then: they’ve mutated, graced the cover of Rolling Stone, and put together their own music festival featuring The Strokes.

The four musical apes come care of Jim Mcnelis (known on Twitter as j1mmy.eth). He’s the founder of NFT42.com. About the signing, McNelis said, “This deal is a leading example of how powerful commercial rights are for collectible NFT projects and their collectors.”

The deal was broked by Celine Joshua, the founder of 10:22pm. The label is described as, “a next-gen Web3 label that discovers and develops artists, intellectual property, brands and digital creators.”

No word yet on what kind of music the NFTs will produce, or rather, who will produce the music for the NFTs. But, if history is to rhyme in this case, there’s nothing to say the musical output can’t be good.

Remembering Gorillaz

Let’s step back and remember the musical oeuvre of the Gorillaz for a second.

The band Gorillaz, which comprised mainly of Damon Albarn of Blur and artist Jamie Hewlett, was met with widespread critical acclaim upon their arrival in the early aughts. They even earned a favorable review from then-snobs Pitchfork.

So who knows. Maybe Kingship will be good — it will probably be terrible. The point being: just because Kingship is an NFT-based musical project it doesn’t mean it will inherently be bad. Rather, if it’s bad, it will be so on its own merits.

The one thing that’s certain: the future of Web3 is coming on.
