Chicken Derby Drop

According to the game’s official Twitter, Chicken Derby’s final drop sold out in less than 5 minutes. The drop, which was run on top of Matic, started at 7pm EST on Friday. Each chicken sold for 0.042 WETH with a max of 10 chickens per transaction, and the sales were randomly distributed from a pool.

Which means that now, all 33,000 “spicy” chickens that will ever be minted are in circulation. From hereon, the only new chickens produced will be bred. Breeding is not yet available, but is part of phase 3 of the roadmap. Chicken Derby is about to enter phase 2 with a beta release of racing.

Chicken Derby is a play-to-earn racer from Bitlovin. They are the team behind Ganja Farmer, a popular DOS game with over 7-million downloads.

The Ethereum-based game is a lighthearted alternative to Zed Run. Rather than the dystopian cyberpunk aesthetic, it opts for a lighter and brighter palette, and a caricature art style, evoking memories of Saturday morning cartoons. Though, the cartoonish look doesn’t mean it’s kid friendly, like Axie Infinity. Some chickens come equipped with machetes and guns (aka “CK-47s”).

Sold Out Before Drop

Last night’s drop ran a lot smoother than the first drop on July 16th.

Chicken Derby’s first 20,000 chickens had sold out before the official launch time because of an early link sent out to Discord members.

A small batch of additional chickens was added shortly after 7pm to accommodate those who waited for the official drop time.

Chicken Derby Gameplay

Although Chicken Derby owes a lot to Zed Run, it’s definitely not an uncreative copycat of the popular horse racing game.

Like Zed Run, Chicken Derby players earn cash or ETH by competing in races, and have the option to breed their chickens.

Where the games differ most is in the gameplay itself. Zed Run is definitely more serious, aiming to be a cyber-Preakness of sorts. It gives horse racing enthusiasts all they love about gambling on ponies, without the bleakness of a real-life race track.

Chicken Derby, on the other hand, isn’t interested in just an aestheticized reality. Chickens have talents like “black hole” or teleportation. They wear eye patches. Some of them are even part robots. Whereas, in Zed Run, the Neuromancer-esque racetracks are as far as they go, liberties-wise.

But what sets Chicken Derby apart, and maybe what’s most interesting about it, is the chickens’ absurdist talents. In Zed, winning races is largely determined by speed and endurance. But with Chicken Derby, players will have the option to drop an anvil on faster chickens, or disperse jetpack-equipped competitors into a black hole.
