Chris Larsen Launches Campaign
Last year, I published an op-ed calling for Bitcoin to consider a move away from PoW to a low energy validation method. Today, I’d like to share an update on how my thinking has evolved on this front. https://t.co/8G3MKmiHYK

Chris Larsen, the co-founder of Ripple Labs a.k.a. the company behind XRP, is pushing to make Bitcoin greener. Alongside environmental NGO Greenpeace, Larsen is launching the “Change the code, not the climate” campaign to encourage Bitcoin to adapt its code to a more environmentally sustainable consensus model.
It’s still a matter of debate how unsustainable the model is but most of the efforts of the industry surround making the energy used by miners greener rather than moving to proof-of-stake.
Larsen pointed out via a Twitter thread, “While I still believe moving to a low-energy consensus mechanism is the most climate-friendly long-term solution, I recognize it’s no easy feat.” Larsen acknowledged the steps that climate-friendly crypto miners are taking, but that other miners aren’t keeping up with the trends.”
Without acknowledging the environmental toll of Christmas lights, Larsen added, “So even with responsible players, there will always be an incentive to seek out the greatest amount of the cheapest power.”
Larsen ended his Twitter thread by accidentally acknowledging the lack of coordination between himself and the Ripple team: “Lastly, I want to emphasize that these efforts are mine alone. While I’m still Chairman of Ripple, the company is not involved in this campaign. (On that note, apologies to the Ripple comms team!).”

Bitcoin Community Reaction (In Their Own Words)
As the campaign’s site states, “If only 30 people — the key miners, exchanges, and core developers who build and contribute to Bitcoin’s code — agreed to reinvent proof-of-work mining or move to a low-energy protocol, Bitcoin would stop polluting the planet.”
Of course, the Bitcoin community is known for being incredibly progressive so they immediately welcomed Larsen’s ideas with open arms…
Chris Larsen is attacking #Bitcoin once again in an attempt to sell even more of his premined unregistered security tokens to stupid people.

Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen is bankrolling a $5 million ad campaign calling on Bitcoin-friendly CEOs to switch the network to proof of stake.
Perhaps he prefers a world where CEOs can centrally control the future of a cryptocurrency network https://t.co/VsUKiyi0yu

Safe to say, the Bitcoin community thinks Ripple is too centralized, and they definitely don’t want to meet Chris Larsen.
