Cosmos Embraces Ethereum Compatibility with Open-Sourced EVM Framework

The Interchain Foundation has funded the open-sourcing of evmOSnow branded Cosmos EVMas the standard Ethereum Virtual Machine framework for the Cosmos ecosystem.
ICF Funds Standardized EVM Integration
The Cosmos ecosystem has taken a significant step towards Ethereum interoperability with the open-sourcing of evmOS, now rebranded as Cosmos EVM, as its canonical Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) framework. The move, backed by the Interchain Foundation (ICF), is intended to establish a standardized EVM implementation across the Cosmos SDK-based chainsan ecosystem comprising over 200 application-specific blockchains.
The initiative will see Tharsis Labs, the core developer behind evmOS, open-source the framework, making it accessible across the Cosmos network. With this development, any Cosmos chain can integrate Ethereum-compatible smart contracts, wallets, and infrastructure without adopting a full Ethereum stack.
Strengthening Cross-Chain Compatibility
By embedding native EVM capabilities into Cosmos SDK chains, Cosmos EVM enables seamless integration with Ethereum tooling, including JSON-RPC support and ERC-20 token compatibility. The integration is expected to enhance liquidity flow and strengthen connectivity between Cosmos and other EVM-based ecosystems via the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol.
According to Barry Plunkett, co-CEO of Interchain Labs,
This will make it extremely seamless for Cosmos developers to have an EVM and extend its functionality with Cosmos.
The Interchain Foundation highlighted that the open-sourced Cosmos EVM will promote permissionless innovation and accelerate the scaling of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications across chains. The move also aligns with a growing trend across the blockchain sector where ecosystems once positioning themselves as Ethereum alternatives are now converging with Ethereums execution environment.
Leadership Transition and Project Continuity
As part of the transition, Federico Kunze Küllmer, co-founder of Evmos, will step down as a core contributor but continue to advise the ICF on Cosmos EVMs modular architecture and interoperability. Altiplanic, his development firm and a key contributor to Evmos codebase will also exit active development roles.
Despite the shift in leadership, the ICF reaffirmed its commitment to the project's roadmap. The foundation aims to make Cosmos EVM a go-to solution for all proof-of-stake networks looking to onboard EVM capabilities and drive broader Web3 adoption.
EVM Adoption Marks Strategic Pivot for Cosmos
Originally conceptualized in 2016 as Ethermint and launched on mainnet in 2022, Evmos was developed to bridge Ethereum's smart contract functionality into the Cosmos ecosystem. The decision to formally adopt an open-source EVM standard signals a strategic shift for Cosmos as it deepens its interoperability with the dominant smart contract ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Evmoss native token has seen a sharp decline, falling over 30% in the last 24 hours, according to data from The Block.
