Offering to put up a security system, a cybersecurity specialist stole $576,000 from a customer in Florida. Aaron Daniel Motta, a 27-year-old suspect, is accused of transferring $576,000 worth of cryptocurrency from a client’s wallet to his own. He was accused of trying to rob a guy of his money while offering to increase his protection. Instead, he broke into the victim’s house and stole the Trezor wallet. Along with catching the culprit, authorities cracked the suspect’s wallet password.
After emptying the man’s wallet, Motta moved the money to his wallet. St. Petersburg College graduate Motta is an ethical hacker and cybersecurity expert. Motta is listed as the proprietor of Motta management and mitigation services on his LinkedIn page. He was taken into custody on counts of grand theft and computer user violations.
Security Weaknesses Often Exploited
Many people are hesitant to utilize wallets after recent attacks like this one. Even though many wallets claim to be secure, hackers often exploit security weaknesses to steal cryptocurrency from unsuspecting users. For example, a new phishing campaign has targeted Trezor hardware crypto wallet users. In addition, an email marketing platform known as Mailchimp was hacked using social engineering techniques.
Trezor customers received emails claiming that their accounts had been compromised as a result of a data breach, according to reports. The attackers recommended a new PIN and an update to Trezor Suite. Such difficulties were addressed earlier this year by Trezor, who announced it. A developer posted a video showing how he hacked a Trezor to retrieve $2 million in cryptocurrency, reminding that such assaults are simple for hackers to execute.
