Durov Speaks Out: How Telegram is Navigating Legal Challenges
Telegrams founder, Pavel Durov, finally spoke out to the public after his high-profile arrest in France last month. The Durov Telegram channel shared a heartfelt message in which he expressed gratitude for the support and love he received during this difficult period.
Durovs arrest emerged from a prolonged police interrogation in Paris, which lasted four days. The French government authorities have reportedly said that Durov might be personally responsible for the misuse of the platform because of the long-term closure of their requests. Durov found this notion surprising for several reasons.
First of all, Telegram has an EU representative for official communications, and French authorities have various ways to reach them. Durov, who has previously set up a direct communication line between Telegram and French officials, is involved in Frances anti-terrorism efforts.
Furthermore, Durovs view on the French approach is that the legal action should be directed to the platform, not the individual executives. He argues that the threat of creators being held liable for misuse of the technology might stifle its development rather than encourage it.
Durov has also spoken about the intricate issue of the privacy-security balance. He acknowledged the fact that there is a problem of harmonizing different privacy laws and law enforcement requirements of the different jurisdictions. The platform is committed to global adherence to its processes but is also vigilant about misuse, especially in countries with weak legal systems.
Telegrams Stance on Regulatory Conflicts
In order to stay true to its values, Telegram will not enter markets where it is at odds with regulators. Durov pointed out the past cases where Telegram did not comply with the Russian and Iranian authorities demands, and as a result, Telegram was banned in those countries. He underlined the fact that Telegrams mission is guided by respect for human rights and not by profit.
While Durov admitted there might be a few glitches with the company, he disagreed with the notion that Telegram functions as an uncontrolled platform. Measures like removing detrimental content, publishing transparency reports, and ensuring immediate interaction with NGOs for urgent moderating requirements are taken by the platform.
The increase in the number of Telegram users recently reached 950 million, which has led to some problems and increased abuse of the platform. Durov has made a promise to improve the security and moderation of the service. He offered to communicate the reports on every single one of these improvements soon.
