The FBI has issued an alert about payments made through cryptocurrency ATMs. According to the agency, the number of victims of financial fraud is increasing because criminals are using these devices, thus also making it difficult to recover the stolen amounts.

  • Change of names in iFood may go to court after complaints from restaurants
  • Axie Infinity players have R$707,000 stolen in an NFT scam on Discord
  • Fake cryptocurrency wallets in Google ads already defrauded $500m

This tactic, according to the FBI alert, is used by criminals in different fraud schemes, such as social engineering scams, where the criminals pretend to be the US government and demand payment of a fine, for example.

Basically, criminals say that the best way to pay the amount is through a cryptocurrency ATM. They send a QR code to the victim, who goes to the machine, purchases the digital assets and scans the code to send the money to the criminals' digital wallet. In addition, criminals maintain online contact with victims throughout the entire process, thus ensuring that the transaction is completed.

The FBI, in the alert, recommends that the population be suspicious of any contact claiming to be from the government or other public bodies, requiring payment in cryptocurrencies, in addition to not following instructions given by strangers over the internet, directing them to an ATM of cryptoactives.

Cryptocurrency scams are increasing

This fraud is just another example of how cryptoactive theft has been on the rise in recent years. According to a survey conducted by Atlas VPN , the first three quarters of 2021 recorded a higher volume of cryptocurrency theft than the entire 2020 .

This high is due to the difficulty in tracking cryptocurrency transactions, which attracts criminals to use this type of payment to make their identification difficult. Furthermore, even if the bandits are arrested, the recovery of the money is still complicated, as it is not known where it ended up after it got into the hands of the scammer.
