Jordan Peterson’s Qualms

Jordan Peterson is a well-known Canadian Professor who has been both lauded and criticized for his anti-establishment bent. However, “on the internet” Peterson is hailed for his relentless promotion of free speech and rejection of censorship and political correctness. So it is no surprise he has meandered down the path towards the Bitcoin Citadel.

Being a frequent and favored guest on the Joe Rogan Experience, Peterson’s influence is vast. Yesterday, he sat down with the author of the Bitcoin Standard, Saifedean Ammous. This book is far and away the most popular tome in the Bitcoin canon.

Going into his talk with Ammous, Peterson clearly had qualms about Bitcoin mining and the energy consumption therein. But, Ammous proved there is no better person to “orange-pill” Peterson. During their discussion, Peterson found himself absolutely floored by what the Bitcoin Standard author had to say.

“I think I must be misunderstanding, because it seems like you can move the value of the electricity magically, without any of the problems of transportation,” Peterson said, working through his thoughts out loud. Ammous responded with a simple, “Yes, exactly.”

Thereafter, videos and memes illuminating the orange glow of Peterson’s lightbulb moment spread across socials.

Peterson’s Lightbulb Moment

It appears part of the “aha” moment for Peterson came–as mentioned above–during the energy FUD portion of the conversation. Ammous explained that Bitcoin actually monetizes ‘stranded, cheap energy’ no matter the geography. Peterson responded by saying:

“It seems to completely contradict the idea that Bitcoin is a waste of the world’s resources. It’s the exact opposite if this monetization idea is actually true.”

As an example, Bitcoin incentivizes a buildout of remote energy sources. If people and businesses relocate to a place for cheap energy once built, they will be essentially moving their energy demand to this new energy source that wouldn’t have existed if Bitcoin didn’t exist. More than that, we hear the poetry of “monetary energy” by Michael Saylor and others, but this “stored” energy concept is powerful, here’s a clip of Saylor explaining it.

Because Peterson has an open mind, it didn’t take long for him to come to the conclusion that Bitcoin mining via PoW is actually one of the most powerful aspects of Bitcoin.

“Red Pill” Peterson

Clearly, the truth of Bitcoin was palpable to someone who seeks it intensely, like Peterson. It could in fact be argued that Bitcoin is now the pre-eminent vector to truth itself; which is exactly what people glean when they listen to Jordan Peterson, he is a voice for truth. So is Bitcoin. Now, of course, what is ‘the truth’ is divisive, and thus Peterson and Bitcoin are too, divisive.

Peterson, through his numerous interviews, lectures, and dialogues is a well-known “red pill” to arguably millions of young people. Meaning, if he is now getting orange-pilled, then perhaps the orange pill is the new red pill. He even tweeted shortly after the interview that he bought more Bitcoin.

When you have someone as thoughtful as Peterson having his eyes “light up” with the laser glow, it goes to show how powerful the concept of Bitcoin is. He even tweeted after the interview that he bought more Bitcoin.

Bitcoin v. Fiat

Bitcoin as the red pill is nothing new. Ammous himself basically argues that all ails or misadventures of society and government can be traced to a rotten and corrupt monetary system (like fiat currency), and historically, the debasement of the currency. So it is not hyperbolic to say that Bitcoin and a foundation of hard money could be seen as truly a “first principle” or pre-requisite to a flourishing society, culture, and government.

People like Peterson are known for espousing a political philosophy, one that unfortunately is forced to play within the parameters of the fiat currency system, that is to say, everything is downstream from the rot of fiat. Embracing Bitcoin is to step outside of that mind frame and embrace a political solution that is monetary in nature, and thus far more powerful than rhetorical activism.

Peterson embracing the orange pill is an important step for promulgating the philosophy of Bitcoin; making sure it makes it into the minds of people, and not just the wallets.
