The most popular baseball league in the world, the MLB, is digging deeper into Web3. The league’s entrance into the metaverse began in early 2022 when the first NFT collection in partnership with Candy Digital was released. Further on, MLB released several other NFT sports collections on SoRare, which has already pioneered the niche of sports NFTs with NBA collections, as well as popular European football leagues.

Currently, due to popular demand, MLB is looking to expand its Web3 ventures by hiring new specialists in digital games, metaverse, and NFTs. The job ad was posted on LinkedIn, according to which “NFTs, the Metaverse, wearable technology, and AR/VR are now part of our expanding business model.”

Complimentary NFTs for Baseball Fans

Moreover, the MLB is running a promotion for the playoff games this Autumn. Ultimately, this means every fan attending the Playoffs for the ’22-’23 season will be able to get a non-fungible token (NFT) free of charge.

In addition, Major League Baseball has joined forces with Candy Digital, a Web3 company that’s focused on digital sports collectibles, to bring the POTD Collection. Since it’s already the postseason in MLB, fans will be able to collect prizes by completing any out of 10 postseason Play Of The Day NFT challenges.

The Niche Of Sports NFTs Growing Fast

With faster adoption speed, the logos and slogans of blockchain companies are often seen on basketball tees, football jerseys, and stadium banners. NFT as a form of sports memorabilia is becoming trendy, as some clubs choose to issue NFT passes to stadiums, while others launch their own football fan tokens. As the FIFA World Cup ‘22 is nearing kick-off, the possibilities for partnerships between blockchain & sports are endless.

On the Flipside

  • Despite the growing sports NFT market & the forthcoming FIFA World Cup ’22, football fan tokens are facing the music of crypto winter with double digits in the red.
