Nigerian Court Dismisses Binance Executives Rights Violation Lawsuit

  • Neither Anjarwalla nor the respondents attorneys had shown up for the hearing.
  • Anjarwalla filed a lawsuit demanding that the agencies conduct be deemed unlawful.

According to local news sources, Binance regional manager Nadeem Anjarwallas lawsuit was dismissed by the Nigerian High Court. Anjarwalla claimed that the seizure of his passport and detention by Nigerian government officials constituted a violation of his basic rights.

Due to a want of diligent prosecution, Judge Inyang Ekwo dismissed Anjarwallas lawsuit against the NSA and the EFCC on June 19. Neither Anjarwalla nor the respondents attorneys had shown up for the hearing.

Ongoing Tussle

On March 28, Anjarwalla filed a lawsuit demanding that the agencies conduct be deemed unlawful. Tonye Krukrubo, Binances lawyer, asked to be removed from the lawsuit at the same time as the filing.

An article in the Nigerian financial publication Nairametrics states that Krukrubo asked Anjarwalla to hire other counsel. Since Anjarwalla had escaped from jail and gone to Kenya at that point, he was not present in court. In order for Anjarwalla to have time to choose new attorneys, the court postponed the hearings until June 19.

The government authorities, according to Anjarwallas lawsuit, violated Section 35 (1) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended). The 26th of February saw the detention of Anjarwalla and Tigran Gambaryan, Binances head of financial crime compliance.

In order to assist with the companys defense against allegations of tax evasion and money laundering, Gambaryan had gone all the way from the US. A rift has sprung up between America and Nigeria over the ongoing tussle brought against Binance. U.S citizen Gambaryan sued the NSA and EFCC independently of Anjarwalla, for the same reasons. On July 9, a hearing will be held over Gambaryans complaint.
