Nike quietly applied for several metaverse-related trademarks on October 27 with the USPTO. The applications are intended for the use of the iconic Nike symbol as a downloadable virtual good, in retail stores (featuring virtual goods), and in virtual environments. The move allows Nike to experiment with the metaverse while protecting their IP.
Protecting IP, obviously, goes against the Web3 open-source ethos. But, corporate monoliths like Nike aren’t going to enter the metaverse unless they can monetize it.

Nike joins several other billion-dollar companies that have already invested delved into the metaverse. Most recently, Facebook announced its metaverse rebrand entitled, Meta. Facebook’s plans are far more elaborate than Nike’s, at least first blush. Facebook wants to built NFT marketplaces on Ethereum, and allow businesses to form using Web3 tech. While Nike is looking to license their products out.
Another company with a more similar approach to Nike, Coca-Cola, already partnered with blockchain game Decentraland back in June. The partnership with avatar maker Tafi saw the Coca-Cola brand used on wearable character jackets. Recently, Decentraland’s MANA token exploded on the news of Facebook’s move into the metaverse.

Nike also recently posted a job looking for a Virtual Material Designer. The position would be a part of a “team focusing on igniting the digital and virtual revolution at Nike.”
