No, Discord Isn’t Giving Up On Integrating Crypto Wallets
Apparently, a lot of people were angry about Discord hinting at a crypto wallet integration. How many exactly? I argue, not enough for Discord to rethink its future.

Much was made of CEO of Discord Jason Citron’s reply on Twitter earlier this week. The CEO of Discord apparently angered a lot of his userbase for daring to suggest he might integrate a crypto wallet into his platform.
The same tired arguments about crypto scams and the environment were the reasons given for the angst. Funny enough, how many of said users were angry was never established.

Most of the outlets tasked with covering this fiasco didn’t bother to clarify whether this was just a vocal minority. Kotaku’s piece is a perfect example. One would think establishing if more Discord users were against it then for it would be pretty vital to the argument. But, no.
Making matters even more journalistically irresponsible, none of these articles even mentioned the incredible amount of crypto communities that populate Discord. Admittedly, the numbers are difficult to quantify, but you’d be hard-pressed to find an NFT project that isn’t hosting its community on Discord. I imagine these people are at worst a vocal minority themselves. It would be worth at least mentioning that.
Despite the lack of any kind of concrete evidence, the campaigns worked, apparently. Citron kind of caved, despite how sweaty the Etsy bros tweets sounded.
so this is the discord CEO teasing some sort of crypto integration.
make sure to let him and discord know how much you hate this both on twitter, and here: https://t.co/k47lT47UEZ
go there. make a thread. yell. tell your friends to do the same. nfts & crypto belong in the trash https://t.co/lcmilUC04s

Jason Citron’s Response
lmao imagine being this much of a corpo & gov propaganda enthusiast, that boot must taste great
look at the energy usage on a single platform like youtube or something before you start complaining about web3

But did he actually?
The Discord CEO wrote, “Thanks for all the perspectives everyone. We have no current plans to ship this internal concept. For now we’re focused on protecting users from spam, scams and fraud. Web3 has lots of good but also lots of problems we need to work through at our scale. More soon.”
What Citron tweeted was picture-perfect PR. Whether he wrote it or paid someone to do it, it doesn’t matter. It’s impressive stuff. Truly. But for as impressive as it is, it’s not impenetrable.
“We have no current plans” and “For now we’re focused” is hardly the kind of code you need Turing for. Loosely translated, what Citron is saying is the equivalent of a parent giving their child a pacifier before delivering some bad news.
But, that’s just my interpretation. Call me crazy, but I doubt the CEO of a company that turned down a billion dollars from Microsoft will let hyperemotional Twitter dictate how and when they deploy Web3 technology onto their platform. Especially since they clearly don’t understand its potential.
if ethereum is a scam you need protection from, then the internet is also a scam you need protection from
