Crypto gaming is often described as the trojan horse that will usher in a new era of digital asset economies. While the industry is still a niche that only hardcore believers are aware of, hundreds of games have been developed across a variety of genres – including horror.

Crypto horror games are special in that they offer unique gameplay mechanics and reward systems. For example, in kill-to-earn games, players are rewarded for successfully killing zombies, vampires, and other horrendous creatures. In survive-to-earn, players receive rewards for creative ways of surviving whatever the game is throwing at them.

In essence, crypto horror games have almost an infinite number of ways to incentivize players. Developers can build layers upon layers of different infrastructure and tweak reward systems to accommodate new gameplays, styles, and economies, effectively making games self-sustaining.

And you can already experience what crypto horror games are all about. To celebrate this year’s Halloween season, we’ve picked the 10 best crypto horror games that you can play now (or will be able to play very soon) and earn rewards in the meantime.

1. Undead Blocks

Undead Blocks is one of the few existing kill-to-earn multiplayer first-person-shooter games.

Developed by Wagyu Games, the game allows players to choose from a selection of weapon NFTs to kill zombies and earn ZBUX tokens in the process. Players can then trade their ZBUX tokens for Gold ZBUX, which in turn can be converted into fiat or swapped for other cryptocurrencies.

The game also has a native token, UNDEAD, which can be used to vote on the future of the game’s ecosystem as well as purchase in-game NFTs. Players can also stake their UNDEAD tokens to earn additional rewards.

Undead Blocks is built on Immutable X, which itself is built using StarkWare’s layer 2 zkrollup technology. This means that players are immune to high gas fees when trading in-game assets.

The game is organizing a Halloween Bash tournament on October 28. The best players will be able to win prizes from a $15,000 prize pool.

2. The Red Village

The Red Village is a dark fantasy game that invites players to battle each other in bloodsport fighting tournaments. Players use Champions – characters that are also NFTs – to fight and earn financial rewards if victorious.

Each Champion has a completely unique name, skills, attributes, and characteristics. Players can buy and sell their Champions freely on the market, as well as summon new ones with better skills and attributes. They can also team up with other players and wage large-scale wars in custom-built, epic arenas, themed for each community.

In the future, players will be able to experience a new game mode called Darklands. Darklands is an open-world MMORPG that is currently being developed by Sydney’s Blowfish Studios, a subsidiary of blockchain gaming giant Animoca Brands.

The Red Village is built on Polygon, an Ethereum layer 2 side chain. For players, this means they no longer need to pay hefty Ethereum layer 1 gas fees.

3. The Bornless

The Bornless is a first-person shooter game based on the book The Lesser Key of Solomon, an anonymous grimoire on demonology compiled in the 17th century.

Players compete with rival players, ward off demons, and collect Incense tokens that can be used to buy in-game assets like tools or weapons. The token is yet to be made available for the Web 3.0 version of the game.

Players can choose from eight playable characters that are also NFTs. There are eight collections of 666 NFTs, and each collection represents one of the eight playable characters.

The developers of the game also plan to incorporate virtual reality features in the near future to make it even spookier.

The game is currently in development but users can join the early-access waitlist. In the meantime, check out The Bornless book (yes, the game has its own book).

4. The Walking Dead: Empires

Ever seen The Walking Dead series? If not, you’ll soon be able to see what it’s all about by playing a crypto game based on the story.

The Walking Dead: Empires is a multiplayer survival game set in the treacherous world of the hit series. To survive, players craft weapons, build bases on their land and collaborate with others. Land, weapons, tools, and bases, are all NFTs that players can trade with each other.

On top of that, players can earn rewards if others sell, buy, build, or kill on their developed land. If one doesn’t have land or wants stronger protection, they can pledge loyalty to those stronger than them.

The game is still in development but players can already buy weapons and other in-game assets on the market.

5. SAW Games

SAW Games is one of the spookiest crypto games out there, developed specifically for Halloween. Based on the original SAW film franchise, the game invites players to play Jigsaw’s Games and win special NFT and SAW-themed prizes.

Players are challenged to survive three separate Games: the Blood Bucket, the Incinerator, and the Acid Bath. The Games are designed to test your endurance, problem-solving abilities, and reflexes.

Players get 24 hours and three attempts to survive one game at a time with as much in-game health as possible. Those with the most health after all three games will be rewarded with special prizes.

To play, players need to purchase a game pass by October 31 before the first game starts. Each game pass costs $50, and players can buy as many passes as they want. The second and third games start on November 2 and 4 at 12 PM EST.

6. Araya

Araya is a single-player survival game that follows the story of a girl who disappeared in a Thai hospital. While the game was originally developed in 2016 by MAD Virtual Reality Studio, Fear, a Web 3.0 gaming studio recently released a blockchain-based version of the game.

Players can purchase two torch NFTs to brighten the hospital and enhance the gaming experience, but it’s also possible to play with a generic torch. The goal of the game is to uncover what really happened to the missing girl.

The best players get rewards in the form of the native token FEAR and other prizes. They can also rank in the monthly Leaderboard of Death to get extra rewards.

The game is built on Polygon, minimizing gas fees.

7. Zombie Guillotine

Zombie Guillotine is an open-world survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world 50 years after the great pandemic turned humanity into aggressive flesh-eating zombies.

Players are invited to compete – or collaborate – with other players by killing zombies and earning ZOMG tokens. The tokens can then be used to purchase different weapons and gears, or simply swapped for other cryptocurrencies.

Players can do a variety of things in the Zombie Guillotine metaverse: craft items, cook food, breed pets, invent tools, and even create or mint real-world items and sell them on the market. The game is built on Polygon and Binance Smart Chain.

8. Dark Eden M

We’ve had zombies, demons, and other horrific creatures but we have yet to have vampires on this list. However, Dark Eden M, a horror MMORPG crypto game full of vampires, changes this.

The game focuses on the battle between the Slayers and the Vampires. The Vampires’ goal is to collect pieces of the Blood Scripture and open the Dark Eden. They want this for obvious reasons – they’re afraid of sunlight.

The Slayers, on the other hand, are there to stop them by killing them and destroying the Blood Scripture. But it’s hard – 60% of the world is suffering from Vampirism, and anyone bitten by Vampires develops Vampire-like characteristics and becomes indistinguishable from them.

Players can choose which side they want to play on early in the game. After choosing their race, there are four subclasses to choose from.

The game uses the blockchain-based gaming platform WEMIX for its digital token, DEBCO. Players can use DEBCO to purchase in-game items to strengthen their characters and provide key elements to win against others.

9. Zombie World Z

Zombie World Z is a kill-to-play strategy crypto game featuring some RPG elements. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which zombies have taken over the Earth and players are challenged to defend themselves against them.

Zombie World Z is built on Binance Chain and offers three game modes: player versus player (PvP), player versus machine (PvE), and metaverse mode. The latter allows players to experience the game’s metaverse through virtual reality (VR) to explore the world and fight Bosses.

The game is based on Zombie Idle Defense, a successful web2 game that has seen over 5 million downloads on GooglePlay, and is another example of established traditional games experimenting with blockchain technology.

Zombie World Z’s economy consists of two tokens. ZWZ is the game’s governance token that can also be used to upgrade and craft NFTs and trade with other players on the marketplace. BRAIN is free to earn and can be used to stake and trade, as well as craft NFTs.

10. Whack Your Undead Neighbor

Whack Your Undead Neighbor is a point-and-click horror crypto game developed by the Web 3.0 gaming studio Fear in collaboration with the developers of the famous Whack It game.

Imagine this: You’re enjoying a nice Sunday afternoon cooking steaks in your backyard with your wife and your dog. Suddenly, you see your neighbor – who has for some reason just turned into a zombie – breaking the fence and running at you. What do you do?

Do you take the baseball bat and whack the zombie in the face? Or do you ask your wife and dog to help? Just point, click, and watch as hilariously dark, blood-soaked scenarios develop.

On top of that, players will soon be able to earn FEAR tokens by simply completing the interactive comic.

Parting Thoughts

Crypto gaming is one of the fastest-growing niches of blockchain-powered applications. While the industry is still in its infancy, there are already games that have attracted thousands of players because of their convincing stories, unique mechanics, and sound in-game economies.

Web 3.0 horror games are one example of such games. Whether it’s kill-to-earn, survive-to-earn, or simply whacking your zombie neighbor, scary blockchain-based games offer interesting alternatives to traditional horror games.

And what better occasion is there to try some of them – and earn juicy rewards in the process – than Halloween?
