Decentraland announced today that Barbados is establishing a virtual embassy within the Ethereum-based blockchain game. The metaverse embassy will be the first of its kind.
The tiny island country of Barbados (pop. 287,000) is widely considered crypto-friendly by the blockchain community. Their prime minister Mia Mottley started wooing blockchain investment as early as 2018.

Outside of building the first embassy in the metaverse, Barbados appears to be considering continued investment into the metaverse.
“The idea is not to pick a winner – the metaverse is still very young and new, and we want to make sure what we build is transferable across the metaworlds,” Barbados Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates H.E. Gabriel Abedhe told Coindesk.

After Facebook announced Meta, some wondered how Decentraland would fit into the future of the metaverse with the social media giant entering the space. Whatever disadvantages may exist in terms of capital, scale, and corporate synergy, the Ethereum-based metaverse appears to have the first-mover advantage.
Especially now that sovereign nations are planting their flag in Decentraland, while Meta is still just a press release.
