Three Blockchain Games You Are Not Too Late On

Gaming hasn’t always been a money suck. It used to be a pretty fair exchange. You paid a set amount in exchange for a game. But the last decade has seen the rise of microtransactions. Microstransactions have cost gamers untold sums of money. The frustration around the industry-wide practice is palpable.

Using the play-to earn model, blockchain games solve this problem. Instead of gouging its users, it turns them into co-owners.

In particular, Axie Infinity perfected this model. The game has over 1 million daily users. Its trading volume is far ahead of any NFT project, let alone NFT game. As well, Axie’s token exploded this year, rising from $0.53 USD to around $69 dollars. Not to mention, some users are already making a living playing the game

It’s not at all irrational to want to FOMO in with all of that going for AXIE. The problem is Axie is a bit too cost prohibitive, even for the most impulsive of FOMOers.

Unlike cryptocurrencies, where you can dollar cost average, a blockchain game like Axie needs a significant initial investment. Right now a full roster of Axie monsters will set you back $1,000 USD at least. There are scholarships offered by existing users, but those aren’t as lucrative as owning your own Axie team — you have to share your profits with the owners.

Considering all that, Axie Infinity is not exactly the easiest crypto project to get into right now. The good news, though, there are some games out there that are demonstrating the promise of the blockchain just like Axie. But, are still relatively accessible to newcomers looking to get into the burgeoning space.

Chain Monsters

Recommended: More on Flow Blockchain, which Chain Monsters is built on.

If you are at all familiar with the world of MMORPGs, you’ll know that they are massively popular. In particular, World of Warcraft (WoW) is one of the most popular video games of all time.

Following on a similar path, Chain Monsters wants to be the WoW of the blockchain. Similar to Axie, you can catch, battle, and trade monsters. Though, the game will be far more advanced graphics-wise.

Where Chain Monsters differs with WoW is in ethos. Chain Monsters will not be gouging its user base the way the popular WoW game does. For example, no monthly subscription will be required to play Chain Monsters.

However, Chain Monsters will also have microtransactions. Users will be able to purchase NFTs to use within the game. But the big difference is whatever you buy has value and can be traded on their marketplace. Whereas, microtransactions in your typical Blizzard game just takes money from its users in exchange for some useless skin.

Beyond that, players are not required to hold NFTs or tokens to start playing. There will be free NFTs able to unlock each season. Meaning that, you don’t have to spend anything start playing and earn value.

Most importantly, new users aren’t shut out. Chain Monsters’ genesis drop is coming Sept 14th.

Chicken Derby

Chicken Derby is a blockchain-based racing game built on Matic. Its Beta is expected sometime in October. Users will be able to race their chickens against each other and earn ETH for top 3 finishes. Also, users will be able to place bets on the races in the future.

Unlike Chain Monsters, Chicken Derby had its final drop on August 20th. But that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. The floor price for chickens is still relatively low. The cheapest chicken currently is going for around 0.07 ETH, which still makes the game very accessible to newcomers.

Beyond its earning potential, Chicken Run shows a lot of promise because of its mix of humour and science.

Each chicken comes with a talent to help win races. Some of them have machetes, others can devolve into a dinosaur. They also have some interesting cosmetic differences, like eyepatches and a robot eye. Suffice to say, Chicken Derby’s meme potential is real, which gives it a chance to break into mainstream.

If you happen to have a background in genetics, it doesn’t hurt either. Breeding is coming to Chicken Derby some time in 2022. Users who understand the probabilities of mixing the chicken’s heritages and talents will best be able to take advantage of the games earning potential moving forward.

Zed Run

Zed Run is definitely the elder statesman on this list. Launched in 2019 on Ethereum, horses were as cheap as 30 dollars. Now new horses are a minimum of $100. But that’s only if you are lucky to snag one during their hotly contested drops.

Horses on the secondary market can be much more expensive. The best horses can go for as much as 150k. But that doesn’t mean you are priced out like in Axie Infinity.

There will be at least one more drop coming from Zed. Approximately 14,000 of Genesis horses are still left, meaning affordable horses starting in the $100 range will be available.

In addition, Zed’s recently launched breeding brought the floor level down for horses to 0.04 ETH. Unlike Chicken Derby, Zed’s breeding is available and there is already a lot written about the genetics of horses.

Zed Run is a bit more serious in nature. It does take some liberties with the settings — races take place in a futuristic dystopia — but otherwise it tries to keep things as close to the real thing as possible, unlike Chicken Derby.

Not to mention, the Ethereum-based game has plans to change not only horse racing, but sports in general. One of the ways it plans to do that is with its public ledger. Unlike its sketchy offshore online rivals, or its steroid taking real life counterparts, Zed Run races are provably fair.
