FTX founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has had a monster year in the crypto space throughout 2021. From alpha crypto callouts to scaling one of the largest exchanges in the US, Sam’s comeup is one for the history books. Here’s some of Sam Bankman-Fried’s biggest stories this year.

Sam Bankman-Fried Solana Call
Starting off with one of the first key moments that really got Sam on everyone’s radar, the CEO garnered a lot of respect from the crypto community at the very beginning of the year after betting big on Solana (SOL), just before the smart contract platform went on to dominate the charts throughout 2021.
In a heated exchange from January between Bankman-Fried and popular crypto trader CoinMamba, Sam promptly told Mamba that he would buy up every bit of SOL that Mamba owned after claiming that Solana was overvalued …when the price was just $3.
I'll buy as much SOL has you have, right now, at $3.
Sell me all you want.
Then go fuck off.

Since then, Solana has more than 60x’d in price. I’d say that call aged fairly well.
Sam Bankman-Fried Becomes Richest Under 30
Those Solana gains certainly paid off for Bankman-Fried, as he has since become one of the youngest self-made billionaires in the world. Bankman-Fried has amassed a net worth of over $22 billion by age 29, making him the wealthiest person under the age of 30 on the planet.

He landed at #32 on this year’s Forbes 400 – that’s quite the achievement for a crypto trader who refuses to rock anything else other than cargo shorts and worn-out New Balances.

One of my last favorite moments from Sam Bankman-Fried this year has to be Sam’s presence at the latest hearing from the House of Financial Services Committee in early December.
Aside from the highly-sophisticated memes that came from it, the hearing was an eye-opener for many members of Congress who have felt confused or even threatened by the rise of cryptocurrencies in the US. Crypto company CEOs and US members of Congress alike gathered to discuss a rich conversation about the nuances of crypto and its relationship to the US government and the world.
Sam had some crypto gospel to preach at the hearing. He noted that crypto and blockchain technology could help solve many of the issues surrounding underbanked and underrepresented communities.
“In general, the global financial ecosystem is not one where sending assets to those that are important to you is easy to do. And this hits the people who are least of the hardest, who have the least access to the financial ecosystem as it exists today.
When you look at the number of people who are underbanked or unbanked in the United States and globally, it’s indicative of a system that does not work for everyone…
Cryptocurrencies do provide a potential way to address a number of these issues, making it easier, cheaper, faster, and more equitable for people to do what they need to do to manage their financial lives.”
Sam Bankman-Fried and other major crypto proponents had plenty else to say. Click here if you’d like to listen to everything that was discussed at the hearing.
FTX Year-In-Review
All that capital that Bankman-Fried amassed throughout the year from crypto gains and FTX revenue allowed him to build up one of the most prominent crypto exchanges in the US. Founded in 2019, Sam has since brought FTX fully into the mainstream.
All within 2021, FTX has signed major deals with some of the biggest names in sports, including Tom Brady, Stephen Curry, and Shohei Ohtani.
FTX is now partnered with or sponsors the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat, Major League Baseball, the International Cricket Council (ICC), Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team, esports giant Team SoloMid (TSM), and the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS).
Investors currently value FTX at $25 billion as of December; however, as reported by The Information, the latest $1.5 billion funding round could raise that valuation to over $32 billion.
All-in-all, it’s been a life-changing year for Sam Bankman-Fried and his crypto exchange. As the bull run progresses into 2022, it’s anyone’s guess what moves Sam has up his sleeve next. Still, I think it’s safe to say that the CEO has plenty of plans in store to continue raising awareness and facilitating more mainstream cryptocurrency adoption.
