Ubisoft is Pulling Back? Rotten Tomatoes Hit the Fan
A week ago, it seemed like mass adoption was coming to fruition pretty quickly. Today, such a statement is questionable as Ubisoft faces mass indignation. The trailer for Ubisoft Quartz, the gaming company’s NFT platform on the Tezos blockchain, received so many negative comments that it was taken down from YouTube. This means you can still access the video via the original link, but it cannot be found in a search, or on Ubisoft’s official channel.
Players seemingly didn’t even pay attention to the values of the NFT platform. For the most part, they didn’t like the company’s approach of selling overpriced cosmetics just for the sake of them being NFTs. The second most common remark was the quality of the game itself, and let’s be honest, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is not their best project to date.
Ubisoft is one of the biggest gaming studios worldwide. They have released such gaming hits as Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, multiple “Tom Clancy” game series’, and many others.
It is quite likely that Ubisoft wanted to test the waters on whether the big market for NFTs had “ripened” in the big games space, which would explain why they chose not to implement them on one of their more popular entries, like Assassin’s Creed or Far Cry. However, they lost a huge potential educational point here. As the pioneer of blockchain, the company had the chance to explain the value of NFTs, but instead they immediately delisted the trailer from YouTube.
Ubisoft needs to keep up with blockchain, that is, if they value the technology as more than potential for loot boxes.
