- BTC adoption is part of the schools mission to teach students about sound money principles and innovation.
- Schools worldwide are integrating Bitcoin into curriculums and treasury strategies to hedge against inflation and prepare for a Web3 future.
Scotland-based Lomond School has made history by becoming the first school in the United Kingdom to accept Bitcoin (BTC) as payment for tuition fees. The announcement stated that students could start making their tuition payments with BTC once the next fall semester began.
The school further revealed that the move is part of its plan to include sound money principles into its curriculum and prepare their students for the modern world. The announcement added that the school considers BTC as the most ideal case study in innovation, economics, ethics and computing.
Lomond also stated that it isnt planning to accept any other digital currency. But if the Lomond community approves, it could develop a BTC treasury at a later time.
In the meantime, all BTC payments would be converted to fiat once received. The move by the UK school is a prime example of a rise in the number of institutions accepting BTC to hedge against inflation following the massive disruption in the worlds financial ecosystem recently.
Schools Are Beginning to Have a Better Understanding of Bitcoin
Many universities and schools have now included bitcoin in the curriculum of study. Some of them have even created a BTC treasury strategy to ensure their coins purchasing power do not reduce as a result of inflation.
The University of Cincinnati started teaching its students about new web3 technologies (including BTC) by integrating crypto courses into its study curriculum three years ago. In 2023, El Salvadors ministry of education and mi primer (a BTC education project) announced a partnership to start educating its school-aged citizens about BTC.
Last July, the University of Wyoming started a BTC research institute, which is devoted to an in-depth study of the leading cryptocurrency. Earlier this year, the university of Austin revealed that it has set aside $5 million to invest in BTC through its endowment fund.
The chief investment officer of the fund, Chun Lai, stated that the fund is investing in BTC to profit from the price gains of the crypto asset, with institutions increasingly adopting cryptocurrencies.
