Union Groups Sue Treasury for Unlawful Data Sharing with DOGE

Union Groups Sue Treasury for Unlawful Data Sharing with DOGE

  • The AFL-CIO has sued the US Treasury, alleging it illegally shared sensitive data with Elon Musks DOGE.
  • The lawsuit claims that millions personal details, including Social Security numbers and bank info, were disclosed without permission.
  • Senators like Wyden, Schumer, and Warren are urging legislative action to secure the Treasurys payment systems.

Union groups have filed a lawsuit against the US Treasury. They accuse the Treasury of breaking federal laws. The lawsuit claims that sensitive financial and personal information is being shared unlawfully. The groups say this data is going to Elon Musks Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This group is linked to Musk and his team.

The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) leads the legal action. The AFL-CIO is the countrys largest union group. They filed the suit in a Washington, DC federal court on February 3. The union alleges that the Treasury has been disclosing personal data without permission. They call the practice unlawful, systematic, and continuous. The lawsuit lists many types of personal data. This includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, home addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, and bank account information. Millions of people may be affected.

Political and Senate Response for DOGE

Senator Ron Wyden has raised concerns about this issue. He cited a February 1 post on Bluesky that claimed DOGE had full access to the Treasurys payments system. Wyden also sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He worried that this access could be used to withhold payments to various programs illegally. Wyden warned that meddling with the payments system could harm the countrys economy. Top Democrats have also voiced their concerns. Senate leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Elizabeth Warren spoke out on February 3. Schumer said he plans to introduce legislation to stop such practices. Warren warned that the system is now at risk of misuse by Musk.

The Treasury and the US DOGE Service have not yet commented. The payments system is a critical part of the government. It processes millions of transactions. It is also responsible for protecting personal data. The alleged disclosure of this data has alarmed many officials.

The controversy comes at a time when the Trump administration is trying to cut federal spending. Elon Musk was given a role in this effort through DOGE. The group was originally led by Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. They promised to cut billions from the federal budget. They also aimed to reduce the number of federal workers.

This lawsuit is a significant challenge. It questions the safety of the governments sensitive data. The case will be closely watched by many. It may change how government data is handled in the future.
