Ethereum Layer 2 Closes In On $5 Billion TVL Mark

There's good news on the Ethereum Layer 2 protocols front as the ecosystem is seeing tremendous growth in a short period of time, since its initial deployment. According to L2 tracking and analytics site L2 Beat, the total value locked is nearing the $5 billion mark - it's currently at $4.91 billion or 1,086,197 in ETH terms. It has risen 14.96% over the past week. For reference, the TVL for these protocols was only $1 billion in the mid of Sep - it's almost a 5X growth since then.

Ethereum Layer 2 Protocols - L2 Beat Overview

However, there is little surprise about the reason for Ethereum Layer 2 protocols' massive popularity. The Ethereum base layer is more congested than ever and is unsuitable for average users. For instance, the measure of how much you would pay for a transaction gwei has routinely hovered around 120-180 for the most time, in the past month and hasn't been under 100 gwei for a while. The rising fees and waiting times appear to be accelerating users' migration to the L2.

Ethereum Layer 2 Protocols - L2 Beat Overview

When it comes to the scaling solutions, rolls ups take the lead seeing the number of roll-ups based solutions in the top ten. Arbitrum is still at the top with around $2.88 billion locked and with a market share of 58.71%. dYdX follows with around $1 billion in TVL and commanding a 20.48% market share. Optimism holds the number three spot with $485 million TVL and a market share of 9.88%.

About Ethereum Layer 2 Protocols

The Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solutions are decentralized protocols that increase the processing capacity of the Ethereum blockchain (scaling) and as a result, relieve congestion on the network. They work by delegating the network processing “off-chain” to their own chain, processing it there, before settling the final balances on the base layer.

These L2 allow users to execute low-cost transactions rapidly. It’s necessary that big exchanges like Coinbase, Binance, etc. integrate them, so average users can benefit from increased throughput and more capacity on blockchains and avoid even the first withdrawal and bridging transactions on-chain.

Arbitrum Overtakes The Lightning Network By 23X Crossing $2.6B TVL In 3 Weeks

Arbitrum mainnet beta launched on the Ethereum network on Sep 01 and there's astonishing progress on that front. As of Sep 21, the Ethereum scaling solution has crossed a Total Value Locked (TVL) figure of $2.6 billion in a short period of three weeks, overtaking its Bitcoin-based counterpart the Lightning Network by 23X. In comparison against Arbitrum, Lightning Network has a TVL of $114M despite being in operation for several years, at this point.

Arbitrum TVL - L2BEAT

According to L2 Beat, the website tracking the metrics of all Ethereum based L2 solutions. Arbitrum has seen the migration of 796,502 ETH from the Ethereum mainnet, currently worth over $2.64B and up 18%+ in the past week. It commands a total market share of 73.94% amongst Ethereum based L2 solutions. That's impressive growth and shows that the roll-ups based true L2 solutions incite user interest. The Lightning Network data took from DeFi Pulse and shows a total of $114M TVL, down over 7% in the past week.

Lightning Network

Lightning Network usage and TVL were going up with the recent El Salvador Bitcoin plan implementation, as the LN was likely to play a key role in Bitcoin scaling by allowing economical operation for the average user, who couldn't afford the Bitcoin base layer fees and processing times otherwise. However, the data indicate otherwise. One likely explanation is that the official Chivo Wallet with the green light for usage by the El Salvadorean Govt and one with the highest adoption doesn't rely on on-chain transactions much. Despite being on the Lightning Network in some manner, processes most txs in a centralized manner.

About Lightning Network

The Lightning Network (LN) is a layer 2 protocol on top of the Bitcoin blockchain. It seeks to improve scalability and settlement speed, by moving small and frequent transactions off-chain. This allows fast peer-to-peer transactions with low fees. The protocol relies on micropayment channels restricted by the size of their deposits. In turn, those channels connect with each other and move liquidity amongst themselves. Only after a closed channel will the balance send to the actual Bitcoin blockchain and updated in the ledger.

About Arbitrum

Arbitrum One is an Ethereum scaling solution, utilizing the roll-ups solutions to super-scale the world’s largest smart contracts blockchain. The Ethereum base layer secures it and it doesn’t have a proprietary token. The EVM compatibility is there and Arbitrum supports Ethereum RPC interfaces too. Arbitrum reduces tx cost and speeds up tx processing time.

How To Use Ethereum Scaling Arbitrum Bridge To Escape High Fees

Arbitrum One publicly deployed it's beta version of the Ethereum L2 scaling solution alongside the Arbitrum bridge onto mainnet on Sep 01. This is a significant attempt to scale the Ethereum blockchain using the roll ups technology and will have long lasting effects on the smart contract platform's future. A lot of users have been recently priced out of the Ethereum blockchain, because of high fees and slow tx times. Arbitrum is attempting to solve that in a decentralized manner, inheriting full security from the Ethereum base layer. Let's see how to use the Arbitrum bridge to migrate funds over to the other side.

How To Add Arbitrum Bridge Onto MetaMask

  1. Visit Arbiscan, scroll down and click Add Arbitrum Network. Authorize via MetaMask.

2. Alternatively, you can manually enter the following information in the Custom RPC addition feature on MetaMask.

4. Authorize the tx on your MetaMask wallet.

Authorize Transaction On MetaMask

5. Wait for the transaction to be confirmed on the blockchain. Congratulation! Your funds have been sent over the Arbitrum Bridge. The deposited Ether can be withdrawn from the second box. If you want to deposit Ethereum based tokens, select ERC-20, open Add Token dialog box and enter contract address. You can find them on CoinGecko. Select amount and click deposit. Authorize transaction.

What can you do now with the funds after sending them over the Arbitrum bridge? Check out this list on Arbitrum Portal. You can open any DApp available there, then simply select the Arbitrum Network on your MetaMask and start enjoying the low fees / fast tx times on the Arbitrum L2 Ethereum scaling solution. You can try Uniswap, Sushiswap, Aave, Balancer etc. The product is still under beta, so be careful. All withdrawals take around a week or seven days to be processed and sent back to the base layer.

Arbitrum One Beta Publicly Launches To Bolster Ethereum Scaling

In a major development for Ethereum scaling, Arbitrum One has launched it’s beta product on the Ethereum mainnet on Sep 01. The Ethereum blockchain has gotten congested lately and the launch will bring a much needed relief to the DApps users. Arbitrum One has long had interest from major developers on Ethereum and several have already migrated their products onto the L2 solution. It also announced $120m in fresh funding from Lightspeed, Pantera, Polychain, Redpoint, Ribbit and others for development / expansion.

https://twitter.com/arbitrum/status/1432817424752128008?s=19

??You can check the list of the DApps here, including those who have already moved or are planning to move soon. However, it must be noted that the product is still in beta, will take time to mature before it can be trusted in nearly the same manner as the Ethereum base layer and therefore users must exercise caution by limiting the funds that they are migrating.

Arbitrum One block explorer Arbiscan is also live. According to the team press release, the product is still not fully decentralized and the team retains the ability to change parameters / upgrade the system / halt it in emergency situations if needed.

The eventual aim is of course complete decentralization, but that will take time to implement. Then, the team would remove the beta tag. A bug bounty program has also gone live to reward bug finders and ensure readiness / security of the system.  Interested users can migrate their funds via this bridge.
