Arkansas Rejects Crypto Mining Proposal Amid Residents Strong Opposition

  • Vilonia has a long history of rejecting crypto mining, and the residents have shown a disinterest in hosting miners.
  • The opposition in the states follows a wider trend witnessed across multiple US municipalities, where crypto-mining steps witness increased investigation.

A state in the United States, Vilonia, Arkansas, has collectively rejected a proposal to set up a crypto mining facility within the city after receiving strong opposition from local residents.

The local media reports mention that the decision came after some weeks of deliberation, in which citizens raised their voices over noise pollution, the rise of energy costs and consumption, and the environmental impact linked to the crypto-mining operations.

In the public meetings, the natives of Vilonia were concerned and said that the mining operations would hinder the quiet atmosphere of the state and stress the local infrastructure. Many residents used examples of other states where crypto mining caused increased electricity costs to support their notion.

The Strong Opposition By The Residents

Vilonia has a long history of rejecting crypto mining, and the residents have shown a disinterest in hosting miners. A year ago, the planning commission of the city rejected Vilo AR permission to develop a crypto mining facility in town and revoked the permit permanently.

In that very year, the natives opposed Green Digitals proposed crypto-mining facility near residential areas, quoting concerns such as constant loud noise from strong mining computers.

Last year, two bills were passed by the Arkansas State House restricting crypto mining in the state. This year, the policymakers of Arkansas proposed a new bill banning crypto mining operations within 30 miles of any US military facility.

Senator Ricky Hill and House Speaker Brian Evans proposed Senate Bill (SB 60), which focused on amending the Arkansas Data Centers Act of 2023 to distance the crypto mining facilities from military installations.

But the city, county, and local affairs committee of the Arkansas Senate didnt accept the bill. The opposition in the states follows a wider trend witnessed across multiple US municipalities, where crypto-mining steps witness increased investigation.
