He explains that this surge is due to a combination of key economic factors, including the Feds decision to raise interest rates from near zero to over 4%, which has attracted global investors in search of better returns on dollar-backed assets. Furthermore, geopolitical uncertainties have enhanced the dollars appeal as a safe-haven asset.
The billionaire also notes the critical role played by dollar-pegged stablecoins like USDT and USDC in solidifying the dollars position in the global economy.
These digital assets, he says, have created a modern form of digital dollarization, increasing global demand for the US dollar, even within the cryptocurrency space.
However, Palihapitiya points out that a strong dollar presents a double-edged sword. While it benefits Americans by boosting their purchasing power abroad, it can hurt US companies, making their products more expensive to foreign markets and reducing their competitiveness.
Additionally, the strong dollar could cause financial instability in other parts of the world, which could ultimately have a negative impact on the US economy. He also warns that the Fed faces the delicate challenge of balancing domestic inflation control with potential global financial instability, as a stronger dollar can have far-reaching effects.
